Dixie Chicks Boycotted

Posted Mar 14, 2003

While performing in London earlier this week, the Dixie Chicks' lead singer Natalie Maines said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." The comments and the followup explanation stirred up some controversy back home, leading to boycotts from country radio stations and the largely-conservative country music audience.

The comments from the online forums show how polarizing politics can be to a community of fans. The unofficial Dixie Chicks news forum thread has 63 posts so far, almost entirely by estranged (and often insulting) former fans. That's relatively civil compared to Usenet or the always incendiary Yahoo Message Boards. It looks like their official website is offline, and the rest of the fan sites are getting slammed this morning from too much activity.

Rather than throw away your already purchased CDs, feel free to send them to me. I'll gladly sell them on eBay, like a rational person.

Besides, isn't it possible to enjoy an artist's music while still disagreeing with their political views?

I think the main deal with me is Natalie doesn't know what the hell she is talking about. I am even more repulsed that she was so crass to Toby Keith and her opinion of his Angry American hit. She had words with him over this song that he wrote for the military and his dad! Now, she is singing the blues about her freedom of speech not being honored and being judged too harshly. Well, she was pretty quick to judge and voice her opinion about another artist and American who had his own rights of freedom of speech. She judged him the way she wanted to and now everyone else is judging her the way they want to. She put her foot in her big mouth. She is just as bad as she is saying everyone is to her.

We are not to judge, there is only one that can. He is in control of what is going on. If we judge The Dixie Chicks for the comment they made, then how are we different from them. They made a judgement of their own, and apparently most of America's are doing the same back to them. Two wrongs do not make a right and no one is going to win in the end. So Pray for our country it is the least anyone can do. I don't like this war thing either and I think it is wrong but I am willing to support my country and the morals and beliefs it was started on.

I never did like the Dixie Chicks. They can't sing worth a darn, they look tacky in their dress; in fact, they don't know how to dress. It would be good to ban them from the Country Music Field. I am for the President and what he stands for - OUR COUNTRY. They should be praying instead of disgracing someone. BAN THEM

3-18-03 The Dixie Chicks are free to make their comments. They are also free to leave this country. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." I am sure the French will welcome you in their arms. Go to Iraq and see how they treat women.

Everyone that has posted on here that has had something negitive to say must be the same people who are trying to get the words "Under God" out of the pledge. See how does it feel I just judged you do to your comments you have posted and I don't know one thing about you. Remember when Ike was in Presidency that he wasn't well liked due to his wanting to goto war even Texans didn't like him. See the history teachers were right History does repeat itself but no one apparently learned the first time. I was not a fan of country music or the Dixie Chicks but I may start now. Everyone needs a friend especially when the world is so mean to them. Everyone needs to release this anger against the chicks to Saddam.

I commend the Dixie Chicks on their moment of courage. To reject Dubya and his chrony's clandestine crusade against the third world is in no way an insult to our armed forces or the spirit of America. In fact it shows greater love for our country that you bigoted dropkicks will ever know.

Rebecca, what the hell did you smoke before your last post? Don't feel sorry for the dc's; the world being 'mean to them' doesn't even equate to the brainless bashing of our President from the so-called celebrities (of whom the Dixie Chumps are a part). We'll hear plenty of crap on Oscar night and I'm sure you'll feel better about them and yourself and the world will be a warmer, fuzzier place.
