    Jun, you are referring to your work at right? I don’t quite understand what you have written, do you want to know what “Young’s Modulus” there is, or do you want that we read about it on your page and learn from it? I doubt it, but if it is the first:

    Young’s Modulus is the STRESS of a material divided by it’s STRAIN. That is how much the material YIELDS for each pound of load put on it. Put another way, it is a measure of the STRENGTH of a material, and is commonly used to measure the strength of metals and other materials used in aircraft and weapons systems.

    A not too brief summary of the Japanese miniskirt analysis:

    Mr. Hirabayashi saw a tv program which claimed that 32cm skirts were all the rage with high school girls. When the girls were asked why, they replied that 34cm skirts were too long, but that 30 cm skirts would expose their underwear. Mr. H. thought that this was rather interesting and (through purely scientific curiosity) determined to find out if there was a scientific, geometric basis for the girls’ claims.

    His first graph shows a very rough diagram of a girl and the length of her underwear compared with the length of her skirt. For some reason, he presumes that the underwear extends 25cm down from the lower back (for the typical girl) while his two hypothetical skirts are 30 and 32 cm from the same spot respectively. Also, he assumes that the average girl is 88cm at the hip/buttocks, giving a 14cm radius (using the simple pie r squared formula). The black line represents the angle of a typical Japanese stairway (This is really the crux of the whole visible underwear phenomenon – a girl must feel safe as she’s going up a flight of stairs – and there are a lot of stairs to negotiate on a typical Japanese urban commute.) The green line is the line below which the underwear becomes visible to persons following up the stairway.

    The next two sets of charts demonstrate angles of view for two sets of stairways – 30 and 25 degree slopes. Basically, on 30 degree steps, even as far as 10 meters away, a person with eyes 150cm above ground wouldn’t be able to break the “underwear protection line” on a girl in a 32cm skirt. However, in a 30cm skirt, a person as close as 4 meters away (a distinct possibility on long Japanese stairways) with eyes 150cm above ground would break the “underwear protection line,” and a girl’s underwear could regrettably be viewed.

    He then adds a few minor variables, such as the height of the platform boots the girls like to wear, but basically, the verdict remains unchanged. The girls’ experience and instinct was borne out by the evidence and 32cm skirts do offer sufficient protection in most circumstances. He does offer an interesting formula:

    tan[angle of the stairs] = (skirt length – 25)/14

    25 is the typical underwear length and 14 is the distance (radius) from the underwear to the edge of the skirt.

    [Based on my experiences in Japan, this kind of extravagant, detailed analysis of unusual human foibles is very common there. I remember watching a major network, prime time variety show that spent an episode examining bidet design and how a Japanese toilet/bidet designer was able to ascertain the typical range of distances between the two major female apertures below the waist in order to design a bidet nozzle that could be accurately aimed/guided by Japanese women as they used the hygiene device. He basically hung out in public areas, spotted women headed for the toilet and asked them to place a sheet of paper on the seat and mark the areas of interest with a pen he provided. What is amazing is how many women agreeably complied, nodding thoughtfully as explained his intent and the procedure.]

    I quite liked the babelfish translation. I was particularly interested in the diagram of the swimsuit with the translated caption “The outline figure of the school swimming wear (perhaps).”

    So it might be the outline figure of the school swimming wear, but maybe not.

    I saw a similar article in a magazine a few years back. A professor was trying to calculate the ideal length of a miniskirt worn on an escalator.

    I don’t understand Mr. Hirabayashi’s equation:

    Staircase angle = (length of skirt – 25) + 14

    But if the skirt is 30 cm, then

    (30 – 25)/14 = 0.3571428.
